To Knit Or Not To Knit: Part One

By

That is the question. Unfortunately, my answer changes by the hour.

You would think, wouldn’t you, that between crochet and knitting, there’s a lot of skill overlap? They both involve yarn, clothing/blankets, needles & hooks, and hell, half the time they get confused for each other anyway. (Fun fact, most ‘crochet’ items you see in stores are actually knit by machines because *apparently* machines can’t replicate crochet.)

Well, you (me) would be wrong. Very much so, if you ask me.

Today’s post is brought to you by, and I can’t believe I get to say this, Lion Brand Yarn, the absolute heroes of my Michaels yarn journey and glorious producers of so many lovely textures, shades, and quantities of yarn. I was already a Lion Brand stan but once they approved me to become an affiliate? It was brand loyalty for life, baby!

As I type this, I realize I am simply avoiding the issue. Turns out, crochet skills do NOT transfer to knitting, and it’s actually a lot harder than I imagined.

Without further ado…

My knitting journey, in several parts.

I bought bamboo knitting needles (straight ones, apparently that was wrong?) a few years ago. I have never used them for their intended purpose but they have been stitch markers, back scratchers, and at one point, a very dangerous incidental weapon.

Then, I made this chunky blanket a couple of years back. I guess I thought it would be easiest to start there but I had to buy multiple sets of GIGANTIC needles… from plastic straight ones (wrong) to massive circulars (too short) that I broke… and finally a pair that worked well enough.

Ultimately, I finished it, but was a little disheartened by how difficult it had been. Though the blanket is a bit short, but I called it a day… and I still have a bit of extra yarn laying around.

Then I gave up for a year, but since I had bought a few knitting patterns on Etsy, I thought I’d try my hand at it another time eventually. When Michaels was having a sale, most likely.

That day finally came, and I began my knitting journey yet again…

Was I successful? You’ll have to wait and see.

XOXO, Ally

Knitting is a favorite past-time of mine as well. However, what I like to weave are stories that awe and inspire. That is my yarn. — Spinner of the Sacred Silk
