Did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was invented by accident? By a woman, obvi. I learned this at a young age, and it’s always stuck with me. Imagine creating something iconic…completely by accident. There’s a metaphor in there about great things happening even when we mess up, but to be honest I have a headache and I’m not prepared to think that much on this Thursday AM.
I did wonder, however, in conversation with Ryan this morning (that’s my boyfriend, for the curious individuals reading that I am not currently related to), how many other things were invented by accident. We were discussing mayo, of all things, and I mentioned a theory that its invention occurred during attempts to preserve eggs. I think it’s a solid theory, but considering I made it up, who knows.

Upon googling, the answer is unclear, but it is likely French, and originated during the Seven Years’ War, but it has roots dating back to Ancient Egypt. For more info on this, google is your friend, as I am actively unwell, as previously stated.
Per History.com (the ancient aliens ppl to be fair so… the historical accuracy is unclear), many items that we use daily have accidental origins. For example:
- The Microwave!
- Penicillin
- Teflon
- Post-Its
- POTATO CHIPS
- Tea Bags
- The Color (or, dye pigment) Purple
- Pacemakers, Playdoh, Popsicles (so many items with the letter P. Much to think about.)
I think if I invented something by accident, it would likely be along the lines of Penicillin. A bacteria/disease/gross biology thing that happens because I accidentally left out a cup of coffee, or let an apple rot in my car. Yikes.
Alas, perhaps I’m not destined to be an inventor. I’ll stick to writing.
