Japan Travel Diaries: Day One

By

So… I went to Japan!

Surprise!

I think I briefly mentioned last post. But, now, I’ll give you a full overview while I wait for this train (septa, get it together).

Ryan and I went to Japan in April for our now seemingly annual professional card game related event.

This year, the Flesh and Blood Pro Tour took place in Yokohama, a city about an hour outside of Tokyo that I had never heard of. It was STUNNING.

Yokohama is this lovely harbor town on the water, but it’s huge so, be sure to have internet access if you don’t speak Japanese. Or, if you’re bad at directions… ahem.

We arrived on the 8th, after a long day of time travel and not much sleep, only to realize that our dinner reservation was pretty much immediately. Ryan and I took to the streets with pre-saved directions and promptly got lost as heck within a 5 minute radius of our restaurant, leaving us 15 minutes late despite being there 30 minutes early. High stress ensued but finally, after getting scolded by the Omakase man and ordering oolong tea (it came iced??) we sat down to eat.

The first plate of food I had in Japan was absolutely WILD. Definitely one of those “How did I end up here?” moments where you question all of your life decisions.

The herring was ~okay~ but the eyeball was sticking out, the jelly was savory and hard, the soup that looks like dishwater was okay but ? And the white thing with red in it was, to put it bluntly, a textural nightmare. The mushroom and seaweed looking thing was good though.

The meal got better mostly, with a salmon roe dish ft. crab, some pieces of sushi, and a steamed egg with eel that I was not fond of but did eat. It was honestly a great texture for an egg, so there’s that.

On the way home, Ryan handled directions and thank god, my parents helped me figure out an internet plan, so I was all set for the next day.

More soon!

XO,

Ally
